A Positive, Free, and Helpful source of truth for Takt, Lean, and Production Planning in Construction.
Takt Planning, Steering, & Control will take over as the main scheduling system in construction. This site is dedicated to maintaining standards that will keep the system pure, reliable and focused on supporting people.
A revolutionary scheduling method that brings rhythm, continuity and consistency to construction projects. Our system is meticulously designed to optimize workflow, stabilize projects and absorb interruptions, variations and delays. With Takt at its core, our approach ensures efficient and streamlined operations, empowering teams to achieve maximum productivity and success.
The takt production system®
is a scheduling system that maps flow through rhythm, continuity, and consistency on a time beat, or takt, through zones with time on the top and location (the value receiving unit) on the left.
It pairs with last planner®
to involve the trade foremen and creates the backbone of your production systems and the alignment of all project resources.
It's made on one page
Showing all three types of flow in construction. the system allows you to level work and create buffers so you can absorb interruptions, variation & delays.
The system stabilizes
the project so you can optimize it.
Takt is the central
theme of all lean scheduling systems in construction.
12 principles of the Takt Production System®
These 12 principles form the foundation of Takt Planning a production-based approach that brings rhythm and flow to construction. Together, they guide teams from pre-construction through completion, ensuring every schedule is clear, coordinated, and built to protect time, budget, and trade flow on site.
01
Always begin with identifying zones with zone density when beginning a schedule.
02
You must have a schedule you can see that is beautiful & clear.
03
Takt plans are made no later than schematic design so we can protect the budget and duration.
04
The person building the job always makes or aligns with Takt schedule.
05
You need a production system, not just a schedule.
06
Cost, production, quality, and safety are all equal, but the schedule comes first and enables the rest.
07
A schedule is not functional without a functional way to manage procurement from the start.
08
Your quality control plan is a flow system. Build it right and you will go fast.
09
Masters study logistics. Your logistics plan is part of the schedule.
10
A plan, schedule, and production system must be complete and reviewed before leaving pre-con.
11
Always protect trade flow.
12
You should always be able to see your buffers compared to the end date.
If your schedule does not obey these 10 commandments
It is not a Takt plan. Doing Takt the wrong way is as bad as not doing a Takt plan at all.
01
Takt plans must be highly visual & clear
02
Takt plans must protect work, crew or trade flow without stacking
03
Takt plans must be scheduled on a rhythm, with continuity & consistency
04
Takt plans must include the appropriate buffers to absorb the risks of the phase
05
Takt plans must be on a takt time by takt zone, and shown with space on the left & time on the top
06
Takt plans must be properly leveled according to work density and optimized with little’s law
07
Takt projects must limit work in process with one-process flow
08
Takt projects must focus on quality by planning it first, building it right the first time, and finishing as you go
09
Takt projects must focus on roadblock removal ahead of the train and the adjustments of constraints in the train
10
Takt plans must have a reasonable overall project duration that will not hurt workers

Takt Essentials
Please return to this Takt Essentials home page when navigating to all the great content on this site.
On this page we outline the 10 Commandments of Takt. If you’re not doing every single one, you’re not doing Takt. All methods and technology should comply with these commandments.
Using a Takt plan the right way creates flow in the field. In this section we present information that will help you to take your Takt plan to the jobsite where the work happens. What is the goal? To create flow!
The key elements of Takt, or Cornerstones, are fundamental to building and executing a successful Takt plan. We cannot manage what we cannot measure, and we cannot measure what we cannot see. The Cornerstones enable use to properly see and manage the Takt system.
Our mission with Takt planning is to elevate the industry with flow and stability which requires very specific beliefs. These 12 principles will help to shape our mindset to create goals that align with Takt.
